Workshop “Genetically modified organisms, their control and monitoring”
In the organization of National Institute of Biology and Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning (MESP), 26th of November, a workshop “Genetically modified organisms, their control and monitoring” was organized. The workshop was dedicated to new information on genetically modified organisms GMOs), theirs legislation and detection. Dr. Martin Batič (MESP) and dr. Boštjan Petelinc (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, MAFF) presented current EU regulations on GMOs from Slovenian perspective. National Institute of Biology is National reference laboratory for detection of GMOs. Lecturers dr. Jana Žel, dr. David Dobnik in dr. Mojca Milavec presented current activities of NIB, research projects and general novelties in GMOs, among them on GM animals. The adaptations of system for GMO detection regarding constantly increasing number of GMOs on the market was also presented and discussed. Dr. Marko Bohanec (Institut "Jožef Stefan") presented Support decision system SIGMO, leading to smart selection of samples for offcial control. The workshop brought together representatives of Slovenian MESP, MAFF, Administration RS for food safety, veterinary and plant protection, Ministry of finance, Customs administration of Republic of Slovenia and representative of Croatian Ministry for Science, Education and Sport.
