Piran awaits attendees for the 4th International Conference Ocean Governance for Sustainability
From 25–27 November, 2019 the European COST Action “Ocean Governance for Sustainability – Challenges, Options and the Role of Science” (CA15217) gathers for their 4th International conference in the coastal city of Piran, Slovenia. The conference is hosted by the National Institute of Biology (NIB) under the coordination of the Local Organiser Valentina Turk, Alenka Malej, and Jerneja Penca, who are excited to welcome around 55 participants from 29 countries from science and politics discussing the future of our oceans during a variety of scientific workshops and lectures.
On Monday 25 November, 9 a.m. Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge will address the audience in her function as the Chair of the Action, followed by Patricia Mozetič (Head of NIB) and Alenka Malej (NIB), who will also introduce the keynote speaker of day 1: Dr. Marko Prem (EMUNI) talking about “Governance challenges in the Mediterranean - contribution of the ICZM Protocol”. His contribution is followed by the contribution by a researcher from the U.S., Dr. Nina Bednarsek with her research on “The emerging science of acidification impacts in the coastal oceans towards policy and governance change”.
Day 2 will start with Prof. Dr. Valentina Turk (NIB) and the EMUNI representative Prof. Dr. Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry welcoming the network and giving center stage to the keynote speaker of this day, Prof. Dr. Alice Vadrot (University of Vienna), who will speak about "Negotiating conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the high seas: insights into science and politics".
In the afternoon Dr. Kimberley Peters, WG 3 Leader, will convene a Round Table on the issue of "Decolonising Ocean Governance", which hopefully will see some inspiring contributions and insights into this important matter.
All of these contributions frame the official scientific programme comprising workshops and meetings of five working groups of the COST Action OceanGov, with a focus on jointly working on the publications with regard to five of the six core themes of this European network: Land-Sea Interaction, Area-Based Management, Seabed Resource Management, Ocean, Climate Change and Acidification, as well as, Fisheries Management. Participating researchers will present their latest results in these fields, while preparing for the final cut of their joint peer chapters to be published within the remaining months of the Action.
About the European COST Project "Ocean Governance for Sustainability"
For several years now, the European Union has been increasingly interested in questions on sustainable ocean management. Above all, an impression of great conceptual fragmentation and missing connections of local, regional, national and global approaches becomes apparent. The aim of the four-year European COST project "Ocean Governance for Sustainability" is thus to address problems of current legislations and regulations in a transdisciplinary way in order to adapt existing strategies in research and policy. The integrative approach which brings together natural, social and human sciences, as well as, international know-how is a specific feature of the COST projects funded by the European Union. The conference in Piran will be the 4th network conference of the project, which was established in September 2016 in Brussels under the direction of Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge (ZMT).
The 4th International Conference of Ocean Governance for Sustainability in Piran is organised by the National Institute of Biology, EMUNI, and Grant Holder Institution Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research in cooperation with the European network funding programme "Cooperation of Science and Technology” (COST).
