THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR BIOLOGY RESPONDS TO THE SO-FAR-UNPRECEDENTED CRISIS
of the new CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC BY MOBILIZING KNOWLEDGE

The National Institute for Biology (NIB) also covers the fields of microbiology and virology among others. In the time of the COVID-19 pandemics, therefore, it responds to solving the so-far-unknown diseases. Thus, the researchers participate with their knowledge and expertise in the fields which touch the biology of viruses, as well as those for which they believe that they can contribute to the knowledge of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, to direct the struggle against the pandemics, and to the protection of health and environment.

“At the NIB, we have prepared a list of the research directions which we follow to preserve the health of people, other organisms, and ecosystems. Our coworkers have identified the essential expertise which we offer to the society within five current national research programs and many national and international projects. We estimate that the proposed upgrades of our scientific-research directives will contribute to the understanding of the biology of the SARS-Cov-2 virus and help to find the solutions in the struggle against the pandemics,” said Assoc. Prof. Matjaž Kuntner, Ph.D., the director of the NIB.

For the scope to be as large as possible, the NIB calls other Slovenian and international laboratories for cooperation in this research.

These days, the researchers of the institute engage in communication with the broader public actively. They also help the remaining disciplines and the government to explain more about the viruses and viral infections in a non-technical manner, especially those viruses and viral infections that are connected with plants and animals.

This year, the National Institute of Biology celebrates the 60^th anniversary of its operations which takes place under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor.
