Ad Futura – Influence of fish population dynamics on aquatic food webs
Project coordinator: Meta Virant-Doberlet, PhD
Duration: 1. 5. 2021 - 30. 4. 2022
This research project aims to evaluate long-term trends of fish populations and their effects on lower trophic levels. We are going to investigate the effects of anthropogenic stressors (e.g. introduction of invasive species, pollution) on lake food webs, functioning of aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem services.
During the project, we are going to collect and analyse data of fish populations and other (a)biotic parameters of Slovenian rivers and lakes to evaluate long-term changes. For data collection and interpretation, we will collaborate with the Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia, colleges at the National Institute of Biology, and institutions abroad. Within the EU network Aquacosm, we are going to investigate the role of individual zooplankton species in the food web and their effects on the lake phytoplankton community. This research of fish communities and aquatic ecosystems will contribute to a better understanding and management of water bodies, which can have positive effects on water quality, fisheries and environmental protection.
