ZDrauA – Next-generation biomonitoring of Drava/Drau for sustainable and healthy regional development

The ZDrauA project will establish and harmonize next-generation biomonitoring (NGB) for benthic invertebrates, fish, and pathogens across Austria and Slovenia. By developing joint (e)DNA protocols, guidelines, and a shared reference database, the project will strengthen the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). A pilot study will demonstrate the application of metabarcoding at selected sites, while cross-border training and outreach activities will involve institutions, experts, communities, and schools. Using a single sample for both biodiversity and pathogen assessment, ZDrauA will advance ecosystem protection, public health surveillance, and regional cooperation.
