In the video above, you can see the empty shells of the fan mussel (Pinna nobilis), and the activity around them. The shells provide a habitat for other organisms, that either attach themselves to them or find food in the surrounding area or lay their eggs. Unfortunately, the fan mussel in the cage, which was monitored by our camera for most of the summer, died. Four young specimens, which were caught with the help of larval collectors as part of the Life Pinna and TRECap projects, are currently being cared for in an aquarium in Piran. Due to mass mortality events caused by pathogens, this once common species has become extremely rare in our sea. The fan mussel is now strictly protected.
