Spreading of a pollutant in the Gulf of Koper

Spreading of a pollutant in the Gulf of Koper

The Marine Biology Station Piran of the National Institute of Biology, in collaboration with the Slovenian Environment Agency, has developed a high-resolution model to predict the dispersion of pollutants from the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant of Koper under the influence of surface currents  in the Gulf of Koper.

The online display provides an hourly forecast of the distribution of surface sea currents in the Gulf of Koper and consequently the distribution of potential pollutants from the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant of Koper for two days in advance. The model takes into account the predicted weather conditions of the ALADIN/SI (ARSO) model, the tides and the climatological flow of the Rižana river. The daily results are available between 11 am and 12 noon local time. The model results will help the relevant authorities to predict and prepare for potential pollution events and to identify vulnerable marine areas that are particularly susceptible to pollution.
