project INTERFACES - Ecohydrological interfaces as critical hotspots for transformations of ecosystem exchange fluxes

INTERFACES is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Union under the FP7 programme from November 2013 to November 2017. It brings together 12 partners from 7 countries across the EU (universities, research institutes and small and medium enterprises) as well, as 10 associated partners. The project will provide groundbreaking supra-disciplinary training to 11 Early Stage Researchers and 4 Experienced Researchers.

The aim of the project is primarily education of young researchers in various fields: hydrology, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, statistical data analysis and modelling. Thiss will enable a holistic approach to research of ecological processes from micro to macro levels. The project also includes exchanges of young researchers through which they learn new techniques, field andlaboratory work in various modern-equipped laboratories.

Marine Biology Station Piran and Department of Systems Biology and Biotechnology are contributing to the project with research work of their young researcher José Gonçalvesa with a masters degree from University in Aveir in Portugal.His resecrah work is focusing on detecting the presence of viruses in the sea and their influence to biological processes in the sea. One of the main technique he uses is concentration of human pathogenic viruses in brachic and marine environment coupled with detection of viruses with real-time PCR. He is collaborating with Mukundh Balasubramanian, a postdoctoral student at BioSistemika LLC, an industrial partner at INTERFACES.
