Delovna področja, raziskovalne in spremljajoče dejavnosti - ENGLISH VERSION IN PREPARATION
V redne dejavnosti MBP sodijo temeljne in aplikativne raziskave, monitoring obalnega morja in pedagoško delo.
Temeljne raziskave opravlja MBP s ciljem poglobiti znanje o dinamiki obalnih morskih ekosistemov. Te raziskave prispevajo k razumevanju splošnih zakonitosti ekoloških procesovin vplivov onesnaženja v morju, predstavljajo pa tudi osnovo za učinkovitejše varovanje kakovosti morja ter nakazujejo smernice za sonaravni razvoj Tržaškega zaliva in zaledja.
Aplikativne raziskave V več kot treh desetletjih svoje dejavnosti je MBP opravila nad 100 takih raziskav, zlasti znanstvenih in strokovnih ekspertiz za številne naročnike, predvsem s področja ekologije, varstva okolja, prostorskega planiranja, gradbenih posegov, marikulture itd.
Stalno spremljanje kakovosti morja (monitoring), z namenom preučiti vplive človekove dejavnosti na ekološke razmere, ter zbiranjainformacij za potrebe prostorskega načrtovanja, turizma in naravovarstvenikov. V okvir teh dejavnosti sodijo mesečna spremljanja kakovosti obalnega morja, raziskave kakovosti morja in vplivov onesnaženja in izvajanje mednarodnih obveznosti Slovenije po Barcelonski konvenciji.
Instrumentalni center Morske biološke postaje Piran deluje od leta 1995, ko je bil pripravljen program dela in imenovani vodja in programski svet Instrumentalnega centra Morske biološke postaje Piran.

EDUCATION AND ACCOMMODATION PROPOSAL OF NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY - MARINE BIOLOGY STATION PIRAN
Marine Biology Station Piran (MBS), a unit of National Institute of Biology (NIB), was founded in 1969. The Station with modern infrastructure is located in Piran. The work is mainly focused on the study of local flora and fauna, ecological research on environmental pollution and interdisciplinary coastal water research. The station consists of 39 people; scientists, tehnicians and administratitve staff who combine research work and application-oriented solution with the aim of a better understanding of the marine ecosystem. Besides basic and applied research, they also give lectures on biodiversity, marine phytoplankton, microbial ecology, coastal oceanography and meiofauna. For many years Marine Biology Station has been visited by educational institutions from all over the world, especially from Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Croatia, Austria, Belgium and the United States of America.
The station offers infrastructure, workroom and equipment for field or laboratory work, lectures, seminars, conferences, basic diving information and accommodation. |
1 BIOLOGY PRACTICE ROOM |
The modern equipped biology practice room offers everything needed for field or laboratory work. Training is conducted in the biology practice room, which contains, all the equipment needed for training purposes; it consists of microscopes, binocular loupes, free seawater flow, gas connections, aquariums, refrigerator and basic laboratory equipment (scissors, scalpels, tweezers, trays). |

2 LECTURE ROOM AND CONFERENCE HALL |
Two rooms are available for lectures, conferences, seminars and field research internship. Both rooms are fully equipped with all audio/video equipment; sound system, microphones, LCD projector, laptop, Wi-Fi, blackboard and consumables (paper, pens, detergent). For large groups, the conference hall offers 95 seats and for smaller groups, the lecture room offers 35 seats.
3 DIVING BASE AND VESSEL |
Carolina (8 - meter boat), can take 10 people on board and is equipped with life jackets. It is intended for educational activities and the collection of biodiversity samples in the water column. The field work is carried out with a qualified skipper and biologists who assist in collecting plankton samples, dredging the seabed and giving short lectures. The collected samples are stored and processed in the biology practice room where the training process continues.
The diving center is equipped with all the necessary equipment for diving, which can be rented. People who have completed the diving course can dive with our researchers. |
4 ACCOMMODATION |
Accommodation is available for guests who would like to stay longer and carry out the educational process. The dormitory consists of 13 rooms and 2 apartments with the capacity of 30 persons. All rooms have a twin bed, bathroom, toilet, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The apartments are air-conditioned, are located on the roof of the station and have their own toilet, kitchen, bedroom, dining room and terrace with sea view. |
In the dormitory there are two lounge/kitchen areas for guests. The kitchen is equipped with all necessary appliances for preparing meals (oven, hotplates, stove, refrigerator, dishes). The use of the kitchen is possible during the whole duration of your stay. A laundry room is available for the entire stay, equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer, clothes iron, ironing board and laundry hanger. |
Recreation is provided with table tennis and indoor cycling. Inside the the station there is a terrace which is mainly used for afternoon meetings and picnics.

Accommodation
Marine Biology Station Piran (MBS), a unit of National Institute of Biology (NIB) has accommodation and educational facilities, dedicated mainly to the educational institutions, that anyway cooperate with MBS or continue their education there, as well as to all those who want to rest on the Slovenian coast.
MBS has thirteen rooms and two apartments with a capacity of 30 beds. All rooms are eqquipped with double bed, private bathroom and toilet, are air-conditioned and equipped with Internet (Wi – Fi). In the accommodation part there are also two kitchen/lounge rooms and laundry room for those who stay longer at MBS.
The fully equipped apartments are located on the roof of the station and have about 44 square meters. They have a private bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living/dining room and a terrace with sea view. The apartments are air-conditioned and have internet connection (Wi – Fi).

Zgodovina Morske Biološke Postaje
Preko trideset let raziskovanja morja v Sloveniji
Pred več kot ridesetimi leti se je iz začetne vneme ljubiteljev morja in zanesenjaških potapljačev porodila želja po ustanovitvi zavoda, ki bi se ukvarjal z raziskavami morja. S tem zapisom želimo bralcem predstaviti edino slovensko raziskovalno ustanovo, ki raziskuje morje, spoznati prehojeno pot od začetnega zanesenjaštva do pomembnega poslanstva, ki ga ima danes Morska biološka postaja (v nadaljevanju MBP) v sredozemskem prostoru.
Zgodovina raziskovanja življenja v Slovenskem morju
MBP sodelovanja danes
Na MBP je tudi sedež operativnega centra International Ocean Institut, ki ima danes 26 centrov po celem svetu. Dejavna je v mnogih združenjih in tesno sodeluje z drugimi sredozemskimi, evropskimi in svetovnimi morskimi institucijami. Tako je npr. MBP je s svojo dejavnostjo na področju prognoze cirkulacije severnega Jadrana in ažurnimi meritvami v njem vključena v evropsko mrežo institucij operativne oceanografije (EuroGOOS), kot tudi v Sredozemsko mrežo (MonGOOS) tovrstnih institucij. Plod tovrstnega sodelovanja so številni raziskovalni projekti, ki jih financira EU in projekti dvostranskega sodelovanja (npr. z Argentino, Brazilijo, Francijo, Hrvaško, Izraelom, Rusijo, Veliko Britanijo, ZDA).
MBP skupina danes
Danes je MBP vključena v mrežo evropskih inštitutov za raziskovanje morja (MARS), je nosilka sodelovanja Slovenije v medvladni oceanografski komisiji (IOC-UNESCO) in sredozemski komisiji za raziskave morja CIESM (Commision internationale pour l'exploration de la Mer Méditeranée) in koordinira dejavnosti MED POL Sredozemskega akcijskega načrta (MAP) programa Združenih narodov za okolje (United Nations Environment Program) v Sloveniji.
2006
Leta 2000 je bilo kupljeno novo raziskovalno plovilo, leta 2006 pa je bila dokončno zgrajena tudi nova stavba Morske biološke postaje.
1979
Leta 1979 se je MBP dokončno preselila v to stavbo, neposredno ob morju in se za nekaj let preimenovala v Morski raziskovalni in izobraževalni center (MRIC), nato pa spet ohranila prvotno ime. Poleg favnističnih in florističnih posebnosti slovenskega morja so raziskovalci MBP spremljali tudi vire ekonomsko pomembnih ribjih vrst v severnem Jadranu (inčun, papalina in sardela). V začetku osemdesetih let so pozornost posvetili tudi okolju obeh strunjanskih lagun.
1970
V prvi polovici sedemdesetih let sta se prof. Štirn in prof. Matjašič s sodelavci lotila prve inventarizacije favne in flore severnega Jadrana. S pomočjo strokovnjakov - specialistov z vsega sveta jim je uspelo evidentirati veliko morskih organizmov iz mnogih skupin. Žal pa je projekt prekmalu zamrl in za veliko skupin še vedno ni podatkov. Tako je poznavanje favne in flore slovenskega morja še danes, na pragu 21. stoletja, skopo in pomanjkljivo.
1969
Morska biološka postaja je bila ustanovljena leta 1969 kot samostojna enota Inštituta za biologijo Univerze iz Ljubljane. Sedež prve postaje je bil v vili na Sončni poti 10 v Portorožu. Veliko zaslug za ustanovitev MBP imata prof. Franc Sušnik in že prej omenjeni prof. Jože Štirn. Ko je Inštitutu za biologijo uspelo pridobiti v uporabo prostore nekdanje tovarne mila Salvetti, je dr. Štirnu in sodelavcem uspelo zatem del teh prostorov preurediti v sodobno stavbo.
Trst in Piran
Čeprav je bil Trst še pred 100 leti prestolnica morske biologije, Tržaški zaliv pa dejansko pionirsko območje raziskav, zveni skoraj paradoksalno, da v Tržaškem zalivu še vedno ne poznamo prav dobro morskega življa, ki ga naseljuje. Podatkov o favni in flori je še vedno malo, tudi s strani prispevka italijanskih kolegov.
1910
Nekatera temeljna dela o planktonu, kot npr. MBPSteuerjev "Planktonkunde" (1910) so nastala prav na tem območju.
Zgodnja sodelovanja
Izredna pestrost vrst živih organizmov je tedaj privabljala znanstvenike - naravoslovce v raziskovalne centre v Rovinju, Trstu in Benetkah.
19. stoletje
Raziskave življenja v Jadranskem morju imajo zavidljivo štiristoletno tradicijo, čeprav je do sistematičnih raziskav na področju številnih naravoslovnih ved dejansko prišlo šele v 19. stoletju.
