On October 2, the COST Action CA16203 “MARISTEM” officially started and will be active for the next 4 years. It was proposed by a panel of 11 countries leaded by Prof. Loriano Ballarin, Department of Biology, University of Padova (Italy) and, at the moment includes 17 COST member countries and Russia. Coordinator at MBS is dr. Andreja Ramšak.

GoJelly project officially kicks off!
NIB representatives participated in the first project meeting on Madeira together with over 40 experts to discuss the first steps to develop sustainable Jellyfish products.
Microplastics in the Gulf of Trieste
Contamination of marine enviroment with plastics and consequently microplastics is nowadays an emerging problem. The quantity of plastic materials in marine environment is increasing every year. They contain different additives which can be harmful to marine organisms after their release from the polymeric material. Moreover, plastic particles, floating on sea surface or settled to the sea bottom represent important surfaces for the adsorption of different pollutants from the seawater and/or sediments. After the ingestion of these particles, the pollutants are released from the particles and accumulated in the organisms, where they can cause severe effects to their health. Researchers from NIB Mateja Grego and Oliver Bajt raised the awareness of plastic pollution and explained their research outcomes for the italian television RAI.

The World Oceans Day theme for 2017 is »Our Oceans, Our Future«. The main conservation focus will be on plastic pollution prevention and cleaning the ocean of marine litter.

Prof. dr. Michael Stachowitsch's opinion about the book "Biogenic formations in the Slovenian sea"
Recently, a new book entitled Biogenic formations in the Slovenian sea, written by some biologists of the Marine Biology Station in Piran, was published. Prof. dr. Michael Stachowitsch expressed his opinion about the book in Annals for Istrian and Mediterranean Studies.
Dr. Michael Stachowitsch´s scientific books donation to dept. of Biological library Ljubljana in Piran
The department of Biological Library at the Marine Biology Station (NIB-MBS) in Piran recently received a donated collection of twenty-five scientific books with topics on marine ecology and biology. The donor of these monographs is Dr. Michael Stachowitsch from the University of Vienna - among researchers at Marine Biology Station Piran well known as Mischka.
The recognition awards for »Prometeus of science for excelence in communication« for the year 2016 to the biodiversity group at the Marine Biology Station of the National Institute of Biology
On the 16th January 2017, the Slovenian Scientific Foundation declared recognition awards for Prometeus of Science for excellence in communication for the year 2016. Among award winners was also the biodiversity group working at the Marine Biology Station Piran of the National Institute of Biology, consisting of prof. dr. Lovrenc Lipej, dr. Martina Orlando Bonaca, dr. Borut Mavrič and mag. Domen Trkov.
Description of new genus Mawia
The December issue of Invertebrate Systematics an article with the description of a new genus Mawia under the title Redescription of Pelagia benovici into a new jellyfish genus, Mawia, gen. nov., and its phylogenetic position within Pelagiidae (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa: Semaeostomeae).
The new web application "Trajectory and hodograph at Buoy Vida"
In the framework of NO IOC in 2016, which among other areas also includes the preservation, development and integration of observing and information system, we developed a web application to display the movement of water masses at the location of oceanographic buoy Vida.
