(I) Učinki toksičnih onesnažil in sevanja na okolje in zdravje ljudi
V okviru proučevanja učinkov toksičnih onesnažil naravnega in antropogenega izvora na okolje in zdravje ljudi so raziskave v veliki meri usmerjene v proučevanje in razumevanje molekularnih mehanizmov genotoksičnega delovanja različnih snovi in njihovih kombiniranih učinkov. Raziskovalci proučujemo delovanje inhibitorjev tirozinskih kinaz (TKI), ki spadajo v skupino protirakavih zdravil. Zaradi njihove vse pogostejše prisotnosti v okolju in njihovega morebitnega škodljivega delovanja raziskujejo njihove akutne in sub-letalne učinke v zarodkih rib cebric, fenotipske spremembe dopolnjujejo z raziskavami na transkriptomskem nivoju. Škodljive genotoksične učinke TKI proučujemo tudi na in vitro človeških celičnih modelih, da bi ugotovili ali ostanki TKI v okolju predstavljajo tveganje za okolje in zdravje ljudi. Raziskave mehanizmov toksičnega in genotoksičnega delovanja cianobakterijskih toksinov so usmerjene v proučevanje kombiniranih učinkov toksinov z drugimi onesnažili kot so na primer bisfenoli, ki smo jim v naravi lahko izpostavljeni hkrati. Tovrstne raziskave so pomembne, saj med onesnažili lahko pride do medsebojnih interakcij, katerih učinki se lahko popolnoma razlikujejo od tistih, ki bi jih pričakovali na osnovi toksikoloških podatkov za posamezne spojine. Uporabne raziskave ekološkega stanja celinskih vod preusmerjamo na raziskave in razvoj novih metodologij ocenjevanja ekološkega stanja celinskih vod, ki temelji na uporabi naprednih tehnik DNA sekveniranja nove generacije, ki se v mednarodnem prostoru vse bolj uveljavlja. Vrednotili bomo prisotnost določenih strupenih vrst toksigenih cianobakterij. Zaradi njhovega pogostega pojavljanja v jezerih in akumulacijah ter posledično pitni vodi, so tudi ljudje lahko izpostavljeni cianotoksinom, zato je nadzor in preprečevanje cianobakterijskega razrasta izrednega pomena. Kriza pomanjkanja čiste vode je namreč eno od največjih tveganj, posebno v času globalnih in lokalnih podnebnih sprememb.
(II) Iniciacija in razvoj raka
Skupina, ki deluje na področju kancerogeneze, bo nadaljevala raziskave vloge in vpliva rakavih matičnih celic, specifično glioblastomskih matičnih celic (GB SC= GSC) na razvoj in napredovanje glioblastoma. Raziskave bodo usmerili v razumevanje vloge novega označevalca teh celic, kot je tetraspanin CD9, ki so ga tudi prvi v literaturi opisali kot pomembnega za vzdrževanje matičnih lastnosti GSC. V bodoče bodo preverjali, kako bi z izbitjem tega gena lahko znižali terapevtsko odpornost GSC celic, ki je ključna za slabo prognozo preživetja bolnikov. Raziskave bodo usmerili tudi na proučevanje dovzetnosti GSC/GB celic za učinke sevanja gama (sodelovanju z Onkološkim institutom in Univerzo v Innsbrucku). Kot primer vpliva mikrookolja oz. stromalnih celic na GB bodo raziskovali vplive mezenhimskih matičnih celic (MSC) v tumorskih nišah, kjer se nahajajo GB matične celice. Vloga MSC je v tem kontekstu še nepojasnjena, a prav te celice so lahko tudi cilj terapije, saj predpostavljamo, da sodelujejo pri napredovanju raka. Nadaljevala se bo mednarodna raziskava leta 2017 pridobljenega Interreg projekta Transglioma, v okviru katerega se gradi skupna, med-regionalna tumorska banka. Proučujejo se novi več-celični in 3 dimenzionalni celični modeli za študij kompleksnih celičnih interakcij, na drugi strani pa tudi vpliv zdravil in naravnih učinkovin. V tem smislu se bomo posvetili kanabinoidom, katerih raziskave smo v tem letu že pričeli. Nadaljevali pa bomo tudi s poskusi proučevanja GB in vivo, na zarodkih rib cebric.
